Accessibility

Last reviewed:

Most people reading this site are older, and many are managing a serious illness. Some are using a screen reader, a magnifier, or a phone held at arm’s length. We have tried to build accordingly.

What we aim for

We aim to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA. We have not had an independent audit, so we describe below what we have actually done and what we know is still outstanding, rather than claiming conformance.

What we have done

  • Large text. Body text is 19–20 pixels, larger than most sites, and nothing in the page body is below 17 pixels.
  • Strong contrast. Text and buttons were measured rather than eyeballed. Body text exceeds 13:1 against the background, well above the 4.5:1 required.
  • Large buttons. Main buttons are at least 56 pixels tall and run the full width of the screen on a phone.
  • Visible labels. Form labels sit above each field and stay visible as you type. We do not use disappearing placeholder text as a label.
  • Keyboard access. Every page can be used without a mouse, and the focused item is clearly outlined.
  • Screen reader structure. One main heading per page, headings in order, real buttons and labels, and a “skip to main content” link.
  • Zoom and reflow. Pages work at 200% text size without content being cut off, and do not scroll sideways on a narrow phone.
  • No moving or timed content. No pop-ups, no carousels, no countdown timers, no autoplaying media, and nothing that disappears before you can read it.
  • Reduced motion respected where your device requests it.
  • The guide in two formats. A web page version alongside the PDF, because a PDF alone is hard work on a phone and for some screen readers.

Known limitations

We would rather tell you these than let you discover them:

  • The site has not been independently audited, and has not been tested with every screen reader and browser combination.
  • The PDF guide is tagged for reading order, but has not had a full PDF/UA accessibility review. If the PDF is difficult, the web version is the better route.

If something is in your way

Tell us and we will fix it, and in the meantime we will get you the information another way — we can read the guide to you over the phone, or post you a large-print copy.
